Combustion plant
The term ‘combustion plant’ refers to any piece of equipment that involves the combustion of a fuel to generate energy. Ref The HS2 London-West Midlands Environmental Statement, published by the Department for Transport in November 2013.
Small Combustion Plant is plant with a rated thermal input less than 1 megawatt (MW).
Medium Combustion Plant (MCP) is plant with a rated thermal input of at least 1 MW but less than 50 MW. Medium combustion plants are used for a wide variety of applications, including; (electricity generation, heating and cooling, providing heat or steam for industrial processes, and so on). Large Combustion Plant (LCP) has a rated thermal input of at least 50 megawatts (MW). This includes plant such as fossil fuel or biomass-fired power stations and combustion in petroleum refineries. Emissions from LCPs are subject to Chapter III and Annex V of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED).
